While it may seem like choosing a toothbrush should be a simple task, these days there are so many options available! Companies have your oral health and your personality in mind when designing toothbrushes, and so there are so many different features to choose from.
Manual or Electric?
The first choice you need to make is whether or not you want a manual or electric toothbrush. While a manual brush is cheaper, and electric brush might come with more features you like or give you a better clean.
Manual Brush Features
While you may think that there are many more features available for electric brushes, you might be surprised the next time you walk down the dental care aisle of the grocery store. Toothbrushes are more than just your favorite color now. Not only do you have different head sizes and bristle hardness to choose from, but there are a multiplicity of features that you can choose between.
For example, if you are worried that your tongue isn’t getting clean and is causing you to have bad breath, check out a toothbrush that has a tongue cleaner. Usually located on the back of the head, this is just some small ribbing that will get plaque off your tongue when you rub the back of your toothbrush head against it.
Another popular features of toothbrushes is rubber bristles. While this many sound strange, it really works! Not all the bristles are rubber—only an extra set around the edges of the head. This acts as a buffer area. While your teeth are getting cleaned by the regular bristles, your gums are being cleaned and massaged by these gentler, rubber bristles.
And finally, if you’re one of those people who always forgets when it’s time to change your toothbrush, you might want to look into a toothbrush with warning bristles. These bristles will change color (usually from blue to white) as the toothbrush wears out, letting you know when it’s time to throw it out and replace it with a new one.
Electric Brush Features
If you opt for an electric brush, here are some features that might be available to you:
- Pressure monitor (to stop you from pushing too hard)
- Removable brush heads
- Massaging, deep clean, or whitening settings
- Various speeds and bristle rotation patterns
