At the dental office of Dr. Scott Tamura in Marina Del Rey, California we perform a “Comprehensive Approach” to your dental treatment.

What this means, is that we take a SYSTEMATIC approach to how we determine what treatment you need and the order that your treatment should be performed.  When you build a house, you need to lay a solid foundation before you can put up the walls and you need to put up the walls before you can put on the roof.   You would never consider putting on the roof before the walls are finished.  This is the principle that is used when we create a Comprehensive Dental Treatment Plan for all new patients in our practice.

At the base of the pyramid is a COMPREHENSIVE ORAL EVALUATION.  Taking X-Rays, performing an Oral Cancer check, a thorough evaluation of your Jaw Joints, checking for Obstructive Sleep Apnea and a tour of your mouth using an Intra-Oral Camera are just a few things Dr. Tamura uses to perform the most comprehensive dental examination you have ever had.

The next block in the pyramid is an evaluation of your PERIODONTAL health.  “Perio” means around and “Dontal” means tooth.  So Periodontal refers to the tissues and structures around your tooth.  That is the gums and bone that hold your teeth in their sockets.  The reason this is one of the foundational layers upon which the pyramid is built, is because you can have beautiful white perfect teeth, but if the underlying gums and bone are compromised, your beautiful white teeth are at risk for tooth loss.

When you see Dr. Tamura’s hygienist to get your teeth cleaned, she will perform a screening for Gum Disease called a Periodontal Probing.

If it is determined that you may be a risk for Periodontal (Gum) Disease, Dr. Tamura may recommend you have a procedure called Deep Cleaning.

The next block in the pyramid is the RESTORATIVE phase of your dental treatment.  This phase of your treatment could include some of the following types of treatment:

The next block in the pyramid is the OCCLUSAL block.  Your Occlusion is the way your upper and lower teeth fit together.  When your teeth don’t come together evenly, it is called a “Bad Bite” and can cause many problems.  Dr. Tamura specializes in treatment for patients who experience Headaches, Migraines, Neck Pain, Back Pain, Ear Problems like Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Vertigo that come from having a Bad Bite.   A specialized computer system called the K7 can be used to determine if you have a Bad Bite.  For more information on why your teeth not fitting together evenly can be such a problem click HERE.

At the top of the pyramid is the COSMETIC or Aesthetic block.  This is where we can beautify your smile with Cosmetic Dentistry.  If you want to brighten your smile Dr. Tamura offers many choices for Tooth Whitening.

If you want to:

  • Close Gaps Between Your Teeth
  • Restore Chipped or Broken Teeth
  • Restore Stained or Discolored Teeth
  • Correct Mis-shaped Teeth
  • Lengthen Short Teeth

Then Porcelain Veneers might be the type of Cosmetic Treatment Dr. Tamura recommends.
