Look at what type of toothbrush you use and look at how easily you wear your bristles down. If you use a medium or soft toothbrush and notice that the bristles look a like you’ve just put them in front of a chainsaw, you might be one of those people who brushes their teeth a little too harshly. By applying an excessive amount of pressure on your gums and teeth when brushing, you can irritate your gums and cause them to bleed and become swollen. In order to ease up on your brushing, opt for an extra-soft bristle toothbrush and try to retrain yourself to brush with a lighter hand.
- Drink Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated isn’t just good for your entire body but it’s also good for your dental and gum health as well. By drinking water throughout the day— especially after meals— you can help to wash away any excess plaque or tartar build-up, leaving you with a healthier smile and healthier gums.
- Watch Stress Levels
Stress can wreak havoc on any part of your body. Cut down on bad gum health and watch out for your stress levels. Stress levels can raise your cortisol levels which cause your gums to bleed more.
- Avoid Tobacco
Cigarettes and chewing tobacco can both contribute to gum disease and oral cancer. If you smoke and are looking for a reason to quite, consider your gums health as the next reason to quit.
