TMJ or TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is a jaw disorder that affects around 10 million Americans. Primarily caused by things like impact or stress, TMD can cause even small things like chewing or yawning to be uncomfortable and even sometimes fairly painful. You might think that the best thing to do for your jaw is to ice it, however, applying a heat pack to your jaw is actually more beneficial. Heat will help to relax your jaw muscles and give you back some of the natural movement in your face. Simply use a heat pack on your face a few times a day for around 5 or 10 minutes. Before applying the heat pack to your face, make sure that you test it first so that you don’t get burned in any way.
As one of the most painful, yet effective, methods of relieving any jaw pain associated with TMD, massage will help to relax the muscles around your jaw and loosen up any tension that you may be feeling. To massage your jaw, use your middle and pointer finger and gently work your way around the bottom to the top of the jaw near your ear canal. Although it might be painful at first, slowly work through the pain until you start to notice some of the pain and tension start to subside.
So, you’re not going to take your jaw on a trip to the gym or for a jaunt around the track, however there are some effective exercises that you can do while at home or from your desk at work. If you notice that your jaw is starting to tense up, simply move it from side to side and hold it on each side for about 10-15 seconds. You can also just open and close your mouth a number of times help alleviate that pain and tension as well.
